Bisque ware is a plenty so maybe I will fire off an cone ten redux this week, but then maybe not... firing a Iowa alumni wood kiln in the early part of the week, which should be fun! Other then that I am pretty busy outside the studio, just had the 4th of July family reunion and hog roast and plan on heading to chicago with my Girlfriend for the weekend!!! I sure am glad that I meet her! anyway going to keep on keeping on! Being Unemployed... Hand building...

Oh, a few of the latest developments about this weekend; one, for the next 5 to 7 days there is a strong chance 'some say' all of Iowa City will be under water. Reasons being a week of rain and extra water being released out of the lock dam... Forecast says that Saturday the only day we will be throwing and Raku glazing will be hot and humid!!! So I will have to be drinking lots of water, today was a pretty hot day too, I just hope that the weather will be nice we all can enjoy before we get flooded. And the greatest news I received in weeks was that not only are we (University of Iowa, Ceramics) going to put on a glaze and throwing show... WE GET TO DISPLAY SOME OF OUR OWN WORK IN THE GALLERY!!! OMG!!! This is huge! There is a possibility that the pieces that we display can be sold... However its got its own complications as does selling any kind of work in a gallery! So yeah AKAR I love you guys!

The event altogether is going to be full of Zazz!

Being unemployed however is becoming very annoying, for obvious reasons, after this week all of my distractions will be put behind me for the most part!? I have leads and opportunity its just to many things in my head hold me back form executing anything 100% (My leg and other baggage...).

In my massive amounts of spare time I have taken up hand building! (With clay! you perverts... and no, not what your thinking either!!! Making pots with my hands...) Continuing a previous body of work that involves sketch platters and I have even began dusting off my slab techniques from a begone era... Its crazy because I cant ever recognize my own work its so different!? I have a lots of influence from different people that I have come into contact with in the past year and really great to see a little of them inside my own work;

Joe Meinecke

Ben(j) Upchurch

Andy Casto

Sun Koo Yuh

The greatest part about this new body work is that its right here in my room! Other then what I have stated not much is going on!?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jrominger-ceramics.blogspot.com/2008/06/artsfest-2008-being-unemployed-hand.html' title='ArtsFest 2008... I have been invited by the Grad students of the ceramics department to come and do some throwing and Raku demonstrations!!! It's going to be an awesome time, I have never done any kind of demo for the open air public before so hopefully the weather will be nice and we will get to make some awesome pots! The most exciting part about it is that we will be having our demo in front of my favorite gallery in Iowa City, AKAR design... Every month there I have been fortunate enough to see the works of tons of todays ceramic artists! The best thing about this gallery is that you can touch everything, and for a potter/ceramist in training like my self that is huge... To see the weight and the craftsmen-ship up close and hold it in your hand is very important!

JUNE 5, 6, AND 7 IOWA CITY, IA ARTFEST!!!

Summer 2008

I have no idea what is in store for this summer... However one thing is for sure that I need two things right off the bat:

I. A job; that will be able to support me and my financial obligations, and in turn keep me form going insane, getting more depressed, and or jumping into the river.

II. A potters wheel; that will allow me to continue to make work and sharpen the skills needed to survive, not just as a production potter but also as an artist. And in turn keeping me from the later part of section I. The only restriction on this is that It would have to be either really small or be put in a place that I could have access to at any time... A 'throw and go' wheel would be perfect for that mission!

III. Maybe if it is at all possible a break, even though I am not exactly busy right now... A break somewhere new would be ideal, which is in the works but its in August and thats a little distant right now!!!

Anyway other then working in clay this year I also got to take a Graphic Design coarse, and was able to learn how to use Illustrator and Photoshop a little and might post some of that work too!? I would like to do some fairs this year to try and get some of this pottery off of my hands, all this stuff will be brought up later... After all I am unemployed and would rather spend my spare time on the net posting crazy rants then doing the alternative thing that involves the net...

cast/cabin fever...

Its been over a month I have had this cast on my leg and this horrible weight on my soul. I defeat my self sometimes, I think to my self if only I had this thing off my leg I could go and do something with life, instead of just sitting around in my room accomplishing a whole lot of nothing!? Then I thought to my self that... "Remember when you had the full use of your legs? You usually spent all your time in the studio (Not a really bad thing) and worked so much that you were wearing your self out." Okay talking to myself is not the answer to my problems either... The point is having nothing but time is the worst thing a person could have going on in their lives. Maybe one day the sun will shine again in my life and I hope that I will life long enough to get there, I dream is and will always be a dream if it stays inside your head...

First NCECA!

Next week on this day will be the first day of my first NCECA (National Council on Education of the Ceramic Arts) conference!
